The Department of Biochemistry was established in the year 1921 and is the oldest in Asia. It has continued to be a major center for research and teaching in India and has contributed significantly to the academic and scientific progress of our country. It is recognized as center for advanced study since 1968. The research in the department has been supported by IISc, DST-FIST program, DBT-Program support, UGC special assistance programme etc. The faculty members have also attracted funds from national (DST, DBT, CSIR, ICMR, DAE, ICAR) and international organizations as well as industries. The faculty members have deservedly received a number of awards and distinctions and our alumni have occupied leading positions in India and abroad. Currently there are 16 faculty members, 2 Emeritus Scientists, 3 Honorary Professors, 88 PhD students, 18 Post-doctoral fellows, 6 administrative staff and 36 temporary staff working in the department.

The current research areas in the department include DNA repair and genomic stability, biology of chaperons, host pathogen interactions, structure and function of proteins and enzymes, metabolic engineering, immune biology, systems biology, development of drug targets, diagnostic tools, vaccines etc.

We have moved to the new biological sciences building about two years ago. With this new work environment, sophisticated facilities and the ambiance for interaction between departments the department of Biochemistry will continue to strive for excellence in research and training.
