Department selects 10-15 students every year for Ph.D program.
For admission to Ph D degree programmes
Basic qualification for eligibility:Master´s or equivalent degree in any branch of Science or
Bachelor’s degree in any branch of Medicine/ Engineering/ Technology/ Agriculture/ Veterinary Science/Pharmacy.
All the applicants should qualify in any one of the following appropriate entrance tests. They will be shortlisted for interview based on the performance in the qualifying test.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE)
Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF
UGC NET for JRF
ICMR JRF
DBT JRF - candidates who have qualified in Grade A are eligible

Candidates shortlisted for interview will be called on specific date for the interviews. Brief guidelines of interview sessions is as follows.
First round of interview: There will be 4 committees to select students and the top 2 students can be selected for the second interview per session (~ 48 students in the second round). The list of selected students will be put out at the end of each session.
Test on basics in three areas, approximately 15 min/student. (can go slightly longer for promising students).
Second round of interview: Tests basics and slightly higher level & problem solving questions in three areas, 20 min/student (can go slightly longer for promising students).
Candidates may meet with faculty members, when they are available to discuss potential projects.
Merit list is put up by the end of interviews
After the merit list is prepared, the faculty preferences will be made known to the faculty
Faculty allocation will be done only after the Dean´s list of students admitted to the Department are made. Allocations will be based on the student´s performance (merit list) and the student´s order of faculty preference. After the list has run, some mutual adjustments between faculty will be permitted.
Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in B Sc or equivalent degree in Biological Sciences (including Bachelor´s degree in Pharmacy, Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences) are eligible to apply.
The short-listing of candidates for interview is based on the performance in JAM.
Those candidates who qualify in JAM and interested to apply for the Ph D (Integrated) programme at the Institute must give IISc as one of the preference while applying online through JAM portal after the JAM results.
